Nine Travel Accessories That Earn Their Space

We tested a lot of small things. These are the ones our team still carries a year later.

An accessory has to pass one test: does it save more hassle than the space it takes? Most fail. These nine don't.

1. A hand luggage scale

Costs less than one overweight fee and removes the whole category of worry. Buy the one with a hook, not a strap.

2. One compression cube, not a full set

A set of six encourages you to fill six. One good cube for clothing and one flat pouch for laundry is the whole system.

3. A short braided cable, plus one long one

The long one is for hotel beds with a socket behind the headboard. You'll understand the first time you need it.

4. A passport wallet you can hold in one hand

Anything you have to open with two hands at a border desk is the wrong shape. RFID blocking is table stakes now.

5. Proper earplugs

Foam is fine. Filtered ones are better and reusable. Either beats noise-cancelling headphones for sleeping upright.

6. A collapsible bottle

Fill it past security, flatten it when empty. Airport water is a $4 problem with a $20 permanent fix.

7. A real luggage tag with a covered address

Paper tags tear off in the sorter. A leather tag with the address hidden under a flap is both durable and private.

8. A universal adapter with pass-through USB-C

One block, one socket, three devices. Check it's rated for the wattage your laptop actually wants.

9. A small dry bag

It's a wet swimsuit bag, a laundry bag, a rain cover for a camera and a pillow when stuffed with a jumper.

A note on honesty

We sell bags, so read this with that in mind. Everything above is what we tell friends who ask, and most of it costs nothing. If a cheaper bag does the job for your trip, buy the cheaper bag.
