The 48-Hour Bag: A Weekend Packing Guide

Friday night to Sunday evening, in one small bag, without thinking about it.

Ben OkadaField tester · January 30, 2026

Duffel bag loaded into a car trunk for a weekend trip

A weekend trip should require zero decisions. The way to get there is to keep a bag permanently packed with everything that isn't clothing, so Friday is a five-minute job.

What lives in the bag permanently

  • Toiletry roll, restocked on the Sunday you get home
  • Charger, one cable, battery pack
  • Painkillers, plasters, a spare hair tie
  • A packable tote for the way home

What you add on Friday

  • One outfit for each day plus one spare top
  • Sleepwear and one extra pair of socks
  • Something warm, regardless of the forecast

Why 30–35 litres is the sweet spot

Big enough for two nights and a pair of boots, small enough that you'll carry it across a car park without complaining. Anything larger and you'll fill it with things you won't use.

The Sunday habit

Unpack the clothing, leave everything else. Restock the toiletries. The bag is ready before you've made dinner, and the next trip starts with a decision you already made.

A note on honesty

We sell bags, so read this with that in mind. Everything above is what we tell friends who ask, and most of it costs nothing. If a cheaper bag does the job for your trip, buy the cheaper bag.
